I'm not looking to race so would BB height really matter? What I want is basically a road bike that I can take on some of the dirt/gravel trails.

Get a Surly Steamroller or something along those lines. They're tough, have the clearances and can go on dirt and gravel.

what year is it? My buddy's 70 motobecan is a fun bike. The rear spacing is big anuff to run a 29er tire. We changed front fork and found road brakes that clears 700c x 35. Cyclocross bikes were 70s steel frames. I took a. Walmart mongoose catch single speed. Changed the for had cantilever up front stick brake in the rear. And tires. Lasted a full year of racing and rides. Bb broke on it Frown . Post pics and I will help.

powerful brakes, so choose the right pads. BB hight can be helped a bit by larger tyres and shorter cranks.

I dont' have a bike as of yet, was just wondering in consideration of possible future purchase of an old road bike.

Old road bikes have wide spacing." For wide tires.

Cross started on old roadies that were too beat to ride on the roads with messed up old parts what were layin around. And merino wool, and mustaches and arm wrestling

I'm thinking of going 1x on my crosscheck, what would be a good tooth count up front and cassette range in back?

Seriously, anyone thinking about doing it. JUST DO IT!
It is so awesome, my next round is in two weeks.
I ride open class on my over the top 700c PK Ripper.
You can make PVC hurdles too. SO fun and easy.
