Can we please get a pic of the drop bar fatbike before you undo it? Sounds very silly.

Ok techy shifter / cassette question for yall....

Say if an 11 speed cassette has a spread of 11-42 vs like some of these newer 11-51T, what actually makes it accommodate that extra physical jump? Is it the shifter lever just pulling more cable? or is it the shape of the cog making that jump? Confused.

Ive always wondered, can say a Shimano XT / SLX shifter just be used on any cassette back there?

Thanks for helping the noob mechanic.

I don't know how to post pix. But it was for gravel use I suppose?

It's just sorcery.

But really, the derailleur moves via a parallelogram that moves it out as it moves in. A derailleur will have a maximum tooth count it can accommodate. Adjusting the "b-screw" (rotating the deralleur on the hanger) will accommodate more space up to a point. For example, I have a new deore derailleur for a 51 tooth, but I only have a 46 tooth cog, so even with the b tension right off, the gap between the jockey wheel and the cog is still bigger than intended.

On shimano derailleur/shifter, the "pull ratio" (i.e. how much cable is pulled to move the derailleur x distance) is the same. The different shifters just index that into smaller movements for more gears.

You MAY be able to get away with an older XT/SLX derailleur on a 11-51T with more b-tension, or it may just shift like shit. 51 is really big, so I am going to say its pushing it. If you want to go that big though, an 11 speed deore derailleur shifter combo is really cost effective.

Thanks for that write up!!!!

It made the most sense that the shifter cable was basically doing the same thing every push, but i wasnt certain. Thanks again.

Yeah the only thing that changes is the derailleur cage with the length of it and the placement of the pulleys. You can't have pulleys too far away from the cassette otherwise it'll shift like garbage and too close it will hit. The length of the cage allows for more chain slack to be taken up as a 11-51t has a 40t gap the derailleur needs to take up vs 31t on an 11-42t. Shifters do not matter. Can run an older xt 11 speed shifter with a new deore derailleur to run 51t or a new deore shifter with an xt derailleur and run a 46t. Mix and match to your hearts content.

Hi guys I lost the wave spring from my Fox 36 grip 2 rebound knob. Rebound works fine and adjustments can be made so I was just wondering if I had to worry about it or not.

Nah not at all. The hsc adjuster might rattle a bit. Thats about it. You could probably stop that by sticking a small o-ring in there. Or just a lump of grease. Just make sure the cover cap doesn't fall off or loads of shit will end up stuck to the grease.

Anyone have experience with the OneUp oversized pin kit? Does it remove play when the post is extended, or when it’s compressed?

I put one in and it worked pretty well and got rid of a lot of the play in my post extended and lowered. It’s pretty cheap and worth a shot.

Had it in my old one, it removed some play, but I honestly only noticed if I was physically moving it with my hand. While sat down, I couldn't tell a difference

Do you guys know of any other bikes that use a 165x45mm size rear shock. I am looking for a new frame but would like to transfer my rear shock over to the new frame. Currently have an evil following frame and would like to try a different frame out. The only other frame that I can find that uses this size is a Giant trance. Does anyone know of any other frames that use this rear shock size?

Do you have a super fancy rear shock or something? Usually better to buy the frame you want which will often come with a shock, and the sell your existing shock.
