The interesting part is that most of us thinks so, at least here in nothern Europe, and that obviously can't be the case.
At least we need some better tools, to be able to tell if what we do is in fact reducing our carbon footprint.

I've made a couple of studies of carbon footprint by now, and every time I was surprised about the result. It was never anything even close to what I expected.

One of the most intersting studies, was single use instuments VS. reusable instruments for surgery.
I thought it would be close, with a marginal benefit to the reuasble.

WRONG!

Reusable is sporting twice the carbon footprint of single use instrumentation.

Why?

Due to the cleaning process being a mess, and that a power hungry one.
I've tried to find this study, but it seems to still be under review, so unfortunately I can't publish it yet.

This opened up my eyes a fair bit, and led me to make other studies in this regard.
It turns out that anything that requires cleaning of sorts, in the most case is horrible for the environment, leaving a huge unexpected carbon footprint.
Plastics are in fact already ahead on points first time it's being filled, compared to reusable glass containers, as the plastic container is produced under sterile conditions, so no cleaning needs to take place before use. Glass on the other hand needs to be cleaned already before the first use.
So contrary to what seems like plain logic, it's a matter of recycling, rather than trying to reuse by cleaning.
Hence my current projects in that regard.

Yeah, Norco sure is among the top FS bike brands out there.
While most of the others have been trying to reinvent suspension technology, with all sorts of strange linkage solutions that they hardly understood the workings of themselves, Norco has been sticking with Horst four bar technology that has been working well for a couple of decades by now, that lots of people are intimatly familiar with, and sports no drawbacks compared to any other system.
If I had to get a new FS bike today, odds are that there would be written Norco on it.

One way of fixing this, could be to demand carbon footprint declarations on the goods, just like there's a declaration of content.

I have thought about this before.

In the UK we have these on all of our food, I think most countries have them in some form:

Instead of calories, fat, saturates, sugar and salt it could be CO2, water use, power use, material gone into landfill and recyclability score.

It is just nearly impossible to gather such information Smile

Their fast riders are busy waisting energy pedalling in the air of jumps
