So im going to cut right to the chase i have a straitline amp pedal stuck in a saint crank on the drive side. I have gone at it with a wrench, liquid wrench, wrench with a 3 ft pipe on the end, heating the crank and cooling the pedal spindle, ive soaked it in liquid wrench over night and it still wont come out!! What else can I do? Drilling it out isnt an option these pedals are worth to much, any ideas? Anyone?

I'll go through the steps I do whenever I have a come across a stuck pedal.. However be wary when applying extra leverage as you don't want to bend any components.

1) give a good soaking of a penetrating oil like PB blaster (I prefer this over liquid wrench, WD-40 etc.)
2) stand bike up, looking at the drive side of your bike, make your crank arm with the rings point at 6 O'clock (down)
3) put wrench in 9 O'clock direction, if you can. (remember only left pedal = opposite thread, we are doing the right pedal, so lefty-loosey is in effect!)

note: if you can't get it set up in the 6 and 9 position, find a sweet spot that will allow you to exert the most force without the cranks spinning around

4) apply perpendicular force onto the wrench (DOWN), feel free to step on it (within reason) and perhaps "bounce" on it with some of your weight

This has worked for me most of the time. You may have to play around with the positioning of the crank. A solid anchor to wrench on makes a world of difference.

If that doesn't work:
5) add leverage bar, do the same

if that doesn't work:
6) hammer wrench and/or bar

if that doesn't work:
7) repeat steps 1-6

if that doesn't work:
8.) use an air hammer either on the pedal (may damage spindle "head") or on the wrench (may damage wrench)

I would advise against heating these components.

If you get them off you will want to clean everything thoroughly, grease the threads before reinstallation, and do not over-tighten (it's not necessary to absolutely drive them on). You may want to do a run through with a tap and die set to freshen up the threads, especially if the pedal was cross-threaded before.

Are you sure you're turning it in the right direction? Try actually tightening them a bit, sounds retarded but it has loosened up stuck pedals for me in the past. Also, try tapping the wrench with a hammer to try and shock it loose, just make sure you have a quality pedal wrench or you risk rounding the wrench flats on the pedal spindle.

Hey.. im a bike tech and if it is proper stuck, remove pedal body and clamp spindle in a vice. Giving you more leverage at a better height, best to remove chainring before hand though now you can get all you body weight behind it. This method has never let me down.

im a bike mech to and didnt learn that on cytech..thats brill advice...i will defo employ that in the future..

thanks for the help guys I got it off, ended up soaking it in liquid wrench for a while then found a big ole pipe to put on my wrench and with a load of elbow grease it came off. I think I just didnt have enough leverage when i tried before and I dont have a stand so it took me a while to find a position to put that much pressure down

Advice for the future - if you have anything seized in, apply heat, gentle at first (heat gun) and more as required (if its really bad blow torch/gas). The metals will expand and contract at different rates and you'll soon get it free. Will work well with a steel spindle in an aluminium crank.

Yea i tried that i cooled the spindle with a can of duster and heated the crank with a small propane torch

Problem with heating on nice kit is you burn paint and cook grease. Works great when its a rusty exhaust bolt where you can heat it till it glows!

I had to get a rusty set of shimano cliplees off a few weeks back for a friend. I soaked it overnight then gave it some force with bigger tools. Can be a real pain in the a...
