Rear spring weight?

So right now I have a 2012 Transition Bottlerocket, and it came with a 450 x 2.37 rear coil. It's too soft for me (I weigh about 175lbs/79kg), and I want a stiffer spring. I don't know what to look for. Do I want a 500lb coil? Or a 550? And would the 2.37 stay the same? What coil should I get?!?!

Cheers,
Alec

you need about 30 percent sag give or take abit go up 50 pounds at a time .I know you dont want to keep buying springs trying to find what works best but when you ride coil that is the way it is. that is the apealing part of these new air shocks that people are putting on DH bikes ,you can change your sag whenever you want when you change your sag you are pretty much changing your spring rate

Im sorry .The 2.37 is probably your stroke and that needs to stay the same if possible

You can try and use an online spring rate calculator like this one

I'm about the same weight as you, and I use a 500 pound spring with a 2.71 inch stroke shock. 500 would probably be fine for you unless your doing huge jumps or drops that result in really harsh bottom outs. And also chickendog, you can use the preload adjuster on coil shocks to change your sag without a new spring rate.

I've always heard rider weight x leverage ratio plus a little = spring rate

Thanks guys! I'll go up 50lbs at a time. They're only about $30. I guess it's okay to have different choices as well....

in my opinion you should be fine with a 450if you are 175...put it stiffer

I bottomed it out on a 3 foot drop... I think I need a 500

Spring is only for ride hight. If your bottoming out, increase the "fast compression", compression, bottom out, or whatever you have. If your at max on those and still bottoming out, the internals will need to be tuned. Going up in spring weight will help a bit, but not as much as you think, and your ride may be too harsh. Good luck,,, suspension tuning is not fun.

Suspension tuning is awesome..... But only if you can get your sag set proper....
