I'm heading to Tahoe for a couple of days next month and got the green light from the wife to take a day and ride. What's the best park to ride and where should I rent a DH/freeride bike for the day? I only get one day so I want to make the most of it...

Tahoe only has two parks right now, Northstar and Kirkwood. If you want to ride DH/FR, N* is your only choice until Sky Tavern opens full time. Mind the schedule for N*, they go back to Fri-Sat-Sun only as of August 19: Dates + Hours of Operation

Check with Cycle Paths (Truckee) for rentals. N* also rents, consensus is that the bike shops taker better care of their rental fleet.

Great info, thanks a lot. Does N* have rental bikes as well? How about gear? Should I plan on bringing my own stuff or would I be better off just renting all of that as well?

Yep, N* rents both bikes and gear (elbow/knee pads, body armor, helmets).
Not sure about goggles, goggles are not a bad idea there because it can get dusty.
