Fack, between some medications, becoming hypothyroid, destroying my right knee completely, poor eating habits, and not having any energy to get out and ride I've accumuated an extra 105 pounds over the last 5 or so years. I declare this is the year I will begin to lose the spare weight. I am 27 and have made it my goal to get back into competetive racing dh by 30. This morning I checked in at 281. Was 175 pre health problems when I was racing nationally. I've bulked up on muscle since then quite a bit, so once I hit 200 we'll see how much more I actually have to lose. Ideally I'd like to be out cycling or jogging, but it's an icy hell outside and my asthma doesn't tolerate cold air. Thinking I'll join a gym in February (get discount to city facilities with my new job). Used to be consistent about working out + stationary bike 2-3 times a week and swimmming lanes 1-2 times a week back in my racing days, or outside riding like 3-5 week in the summer with a very physical job. Hoping to work back in to a similar schedule new job permitting. Meanwhile Ive been doing some home weights and cardio, though my knees aren't super happy. Anyhow, just thought I'd post my goals - since writing it out is supposed to be helpful.
220 lbs, 5'9", quite happy with my riding at the moment, maybe not so much when long slogging uphill.
on a bid to loose some of the spare weight I am carrying for overall health reasons and aiming to shed 30lbs over the next 6 months.
just wondering what kind of effect this would have on my riding?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I did go back on the thread about 10 pages then gave up
I'm a few months into a similar goal. From 244 to 225 in 3 months. In short the riding will become much easier. Only downside is you may want to hit the weights to to counter muscle loss. I recommend 3 days a week of weight training focusing on compound lifts
CROSS FIT AND/OR BOOT CAMPS ARE THE WAY TO GO! Not only am I 43, but I also only quit smoking 5years ago. I struggled with my cardio and endurance and had a nice belly with some serious matching love handles too. I live in Florida so I can only downhill 3x per season, and its a journey!
The point here is that this year I decided to purse downhill racing, with a solid All Mountain and BMX background!
In the past I never had been able to ride any dh trails from top to bottom without having to stop and rest at least once. Sad!
So in preparation for my first race (US OPEN @ MTN CREEK MAY2017 / AM35+) I started training 2months prior!
With a starting weight of 194, I trained m-f 5x week, and did a XC/ALL Mountain ride on Sat and cleaned up the diet too!
60 days later I drop to 180, and didn't notice much by way of strength or endurance, until I got to Creek! It was there I realized that I was able to ride/race and shred for 3 days straight, with minimal effort! I was blown away.
Yes Crossfit & Boot Camp does cost more, but worth its weight in GOLD if you put forth the effort as I did!
I'm 5 ft. 10 and weigh 225. I lost 20 pounds since I took up mountain biking two years ago. My health has improved tremendously. Plus my blood pressure and resting heart rate are excellent nowadays. Still looking to shed another 20 pounds though.
