I got a 26'' and a 29er ...what I can say is this try them all and see what you prefer.. people who tend to keep riding the 26'' size are more into technical riding or down hill.. they don't make 29er down hill rigs for a reason... fact is that 29ers handle different and mostly roadie/xc racer types like them because they get used to the momentum of big wheels.. also really the only advantage to running 29'' is rolling resistance on somewhat flat terrain without many ultra challenging obstacles like huge rocks or really steep hills most 29er riders dismount and run up or over tough stuff because it takes more momentum to clear stuff with bigger wheels ..and when going down hill in some cases you can jump stuff easier with less lip skills..but when it gets hairy they are definitely a hand full and often times fall short of the handling capabilities of a 26'' bike... ie: football rolls over the bars and taco rims... because of this I plan to always ride 26'' for all mountain, DH , and technical XC... but I will use the 29er when the terrain is easy enough for the wagon wheels to stay on track..my next bike will be a 27.5 so if I got all three sizes available I can pick and choose whats best for the ride at hand...the real truth is the smaller the wheel the better it handles that's why trials bikes have smaller wheels and dirt bikes have 19'' wheels so if you had an engine on your mountain bike you would not even consider 29'' wheels... ; )
I had 26" bikes for ages as did most people, now I have a 27.5, not sure what the big deal is. If you don't want a 27.5 then stick with your 26". End of.
change fatigue. BB, steerers, axles front and rear, bar diameter, 29in wheels, rear cassettes. some of us have to think long and hard to get the most out of our investment. when we finally make a decision maybe we get a bit attached and its not to much to ask for a decent life expectancy. but it seems every second month we're told our gear is obsolete, its not compatible with new products, and those it is compatible with are hard to source. We're expected to fork our more money to solve a problem that we didn't know existed, or self kit thats in perfect working order. so in some ways its a bit of a slap in the face and insults our intelligence.
+1 on that. You express my point of view better than I ever could. It´s not really about wheel size - its about respect for the guys who pays it all...
Im so glad all of my bikes are on 26" wheels. XC, AM, and DH. Wouldnt have it any other way for 2014. Hopefully for 2015 and 16 as well, but I can see a short future for my 26 only quiver, unfortunately.
Im not too scared of 27.5, but I have never ridden one long enough. I just know its not that big of a difference. I have ridden two different 29ers long enough, and I do not like them..
Imagine if the 29er took over like the 27.5, that be a nightmare. Im a big guy too.
I just rode these two Specialized demos in Winter Park at Colorado Freeride Fest... Demo DH and Enduro Carbon, both 27.5". Felt rad........ especially the Enduro. Ridiculously light, smooth, easy to ride. Plush yet responsive. Unreal.
