Looking for some tech support. Plan on fitting the 40t expander sprocket to the alpine 160 rs. I know I'll have to change my current cassette as it's riveted together. So plan is to use an XT one. Hope say use the 17t ring as it's the easyist to remove. I'd of though dropping from 19 to 15 would be a big clunk down. The local bike store said remove second bottom though that's the 13t if I'm correct. They also said don't remove the last one 11t as it's used to lock up the cassette , but on the drawings I've view on shimano web site dispute this as it's not connected to securing the cassette. I'm using a 32 ring up front so might need a longer chain.

Don't remove your 11t. Itll lower your top speed. I'd probably agree with hope on this one. Removing any other will still have a large jump unless you add a 16t.

Your current cassete is one piece? Where does the riveting start?

Yeh the current shimano is one piece. Changing it isn't an issue. Hope state that 17t is the easiest to remove. Not sure what they mean by that as you've got to remove the lower ones first.

I use the T-rex myself, I have removed the 17 and replaced the 15 with a 16, so the jump is not that big.

Cheers gents. I've been told you can't remove the 11t as it's used to secure the cassette together. So went for gold to match kashima uppers.

Also, removing the 11 is pointless as you are no longer extending the range of your gears....!

when was the last time you actually used the 11t though

If you run 1x and you're not using the highest gears then you're missing out on a wider gearing range and should consider a different front chainring

can't ever remember going over 30mph off road. Sacraficing a bit of top end speed for a smoother range is what I would do. If I changed my 32 to a 30 I would drop one cog at the rear and still would't use the 11t. would depend on the person. maybe once I got fitter I would but not the now lol

Ya can't loose the 11t as it's part of the securing set up from the cassette. Removed the 17t and it works spot on.

Just got a gold 40t for my xt cassette. It seems that there is no need for any spacers between the 40 and 36 correct? (Have yet to put it on)

Correct buddy no spacer needed due to the design of the T. rex.

11-36 cassette with a 30t chainring is exactly the same ratio as 11-40 cassette with a 32t chainring.ie just as easy to pedal.Either go 11-42 or don't bother just swap chainring to 30t.Simples

This is true if you only care about your 1st gear ratio. However if, like me, you run out of gears as the speeds increase with an 11/30 then the 40T gives you another option.
