Mercyful fate is a bit heavy on the death tone for me mate, look up the story behind diamonds album 'graveyard' it's pretty f*cked up
80's metal was all about shock...its allbin good fun and should not be taken seriously...some of the best guitar work ever period...but not for all if you no like...
Its more like the newer bands that 80s metal fans would enjoy.
When I was 15 I was heavy into Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, and Demons & Wizards. Especially Iced Earth. "Watching Over Me" was one of the songs that I listened to over and over when my dad died. Any Iced Earth fan who has experienced a significant loss in their life can vouch for the power of that song.
Listen to Cacophony, it was Marty Friedman (Later with Megadeth) and Jason Becker's band with some of the best guitar pieces I have ever heard. And then listen to Jason's solo album, Perpetual Burn.
Also Iron Maiden's live album, Live After Death is the best live performance probably ever in history.
High on Fire - look for the song "king of days" if you have not heard them Electric Wizard - "dope throne", enough said Immortal - listen to the song "sons of northern darkness" Nuclear Holocaust
