Thinking of building a Yeti 4x as a "mini DH" shreader. Would a 180mm fork be over kill?

All comments welcome.

Buy a trail bike dude... the 4x have absolute shitbox geo for anything rough. Super steep angles and short wheelbase/reach even on the bigger one.

I was just going to say.. I would rather have my DJ built up as a "Mini-DH" bike rather than a 4X.

The DJ is slacker, longer rear end, tapered HT and all around beefier frame...

Or just buy a trail bike..

I dunno, my meta 4x was pretty awesome with a 130mm fork and offsets for a bit of trail riding and sik jamps. Granted the meta is on the long side for a 4x bike but it worked pretty well. However, if you don't get off the ground a lot nearly any modern trail bike will be a better option, especially if you're tall.
Do not run a 180mm fork. I wouldn't go more than +20mm a2c over what it was designed for.

You will snap a Headtube off at 180 on the 4x.

Not likely, my 4x is as beefy as my DH frame, geo and BB height would be wacky, but strength wise 180 wouldn't be an issue.

Meta 4X long
120mm Argle RCTs
Works - 1.5 degree headset.
XT drivrtrain
Formula RO's (203 / 180)
Hope on Arch Ex's (destroyed - either 471's or 570's next)
Renthal, haven, SDG, ODI, Brand X...
tyres, depends where I am riding.

Using this as a 4X, DJ, shuttle, hooligan, BMX, trials bike, would also ride it cross country but the frame is way to low at my height for any pole to be long enough. Suspension isn't exactly plush, but is does amaze as the casings you can ride away from. Very fun bike on DH flow trails.

There is so many brilliant frames out there to do exactly what you want, don't go potentially breaking a rare frame and most likely your face when you crash.

No concerns about throwing the chain without a front guide? Id like to run a narrow wide on my 4x, if it works well enough.

none at all for me, been running a narrow wide setup on my enduro and downhill bike for nearly a year now and they're fine, only just started droping on the enduro bike but thats cause it's worn af Smile
