Alrighty - loads of people usually start popping up questions in the spring about where/when races are. Other bits you should know:


Is your bike suitable for DH racing?

If your bike is fully functionable (parts aren't broken), you have 2 working brakes, and it's obviously not going to snap give it a go on the DH courses. If you feel rather confident with taking your bike downhill - go ahead and give some races a try. Free ride bikes and dh bikes are obvious choices, but I;ve seen people on street rigs and more xcish bikes do fine at some of the tamer courses. Realize that on a full out DH course you probably don't want to take your skinny tired xc rig.. but there are plenty of Dh races that are more like a nice dual slalom track than a rocky rutted path. In the end - evaluate your skill, ask some of the locals what the course is like, and if you think your bike and you can handle it... don't be scared to give it a try!


What personal gear do I need?

Helmets are mandatory at all races. A full face will be required at most DH races.
Full Fingered Gloves are a very good idea.
Knee/shin armour is next on my list for gear, as when you fall they seem the most likely to get bashed up.
Goggles for the wet and dusty conditions are also a good idea

Than, consider spinal/torso armour and arm armour. Many people will argue that it is just as important as the rest. I personally will wear these extras depending on what the course is like. The come out for the higher risk courses - ones that are littered in rocks and trees and such.

A Jersey and a good sturdy pair of shorts is always nice.. a normal t shirt/sweatshirt will do though. I prefer long sleeved as trees branches hurt alot more when they hit bare skin as oposed to covered skin.

At 4x races - long pants will more than likely be required.

UCI actually requires you to have no bare arms or legs showing. The most common combo's you'll see to stay in the clear with this rule are:
-full leg armor and arm armor with a t-shirt and shorts

What does my bike need?

It needs to be fully operating, no broken bits. Race organizers are allowed to inspect bikes and deem them unfittable to race - so best idea is just have it running. For most races you will want to have 2 fully functional brakes (there are a few cases where only having 1 is okay). For most DH - a beefy hardtail will do. At 4x races, you may be required to pad your bike, but a bmx race pad kit isn't very expensive.


Liscence:

Most races require a liscence. A liscence can be obtained through the UCI directly, or by registering with your local state/provincial association. Liscences will generally cost between $80 to $150. If you plan on racing less than twice in a year you can opt to buy day liscences, which are generally $10 an event.


Insurance:
Most races will also need insurance. Insurance can be obtained through joining a local club that is affiliated and pays dues to the UCI/your provincial association. You can also pay the fee when you get your liscence. It generally costs about $25+ and covers your for the year. Most places will require you to have proof of insurance when you go to buy your liscence or require for you to pay your insurance than.


Clubs/Teams:

Clubs and teams are a good way to meet like minded individuals. There are generally alot of talent in a team, and it's a good place to boost your own skills and confidence. They can teach you to be more agressive in your riding, learn new skills, pick better lines, etc. Many clubs can also get you deals on gear and parts. If you want to learn and progress faster - try hooking up with a local club or team. They can also keep you informed on upcoming races and give you people to travel with when going to such races/events. Costs will vary depending on what all the team provides.



Costs:

Now after reading all this you are probably thinking that is expensive. It sure is. First off you need to have your bike.. and than be able to replace parts (as racing is very hard on parts - and it is not uncommon to break stuff). Than you need to get your personal gear. Insurance/liscene adds on to the fees. Than add on entry fees for races that range anywhere from $25 to a $125. Than add on travel fees such as gas, hotels, and food. It is an expensive sport - but it's loads of fun.

Irish NPS Dtaes.

Round 1, hosted by 021 Racing, will take place at the home of the 2008 Irish National Championships, at Cahir, Co Tipperary. Round 1 will be held on 4th/5th April 2009.

Round 2 returns to Dunmanway, Co Cork. The venue of Dunmanway has been used for the last 2 NPS races and is at the most southerly point of the country. It will take place on 2/3rd May 20089

Round 3, hosted by Chain Reaction Cycling Club is due to take place on the 23rd/24th May 2009. As with previous years, the Ulster based clubs have issues with permission to use tracks on Forestry Service land therefore the venue will be announced closer to the time.

Round 4 brings riders to Co Wexford and to Bree. The event takes place on 20/21st June and will be held in the same location of the events hosted by Bree Racing Club in 2007 and 2008.

Round 5 returns to Killarney for the third consecutive year, where Killarney Cycling Club, will hosted their event on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July 2009.

Round 6 will be held in a new venue to Irish Downhillers. Cullo Downhill Club will be hosting round 6 on 8/9th August in Co Loais.

Round 7 returns to Ulster to a venue still yet to be confirmed. It will take place on 26/27 September and will be hosted by Chain Reaction Cycling Club.

Round 8 sees the return to White Horse, Co Waterford. Hosted by 021 racing the final event will be held on 3/4th October 2009.

Along with 8 NPS races, the Irish calendar will also see the Irish national Downhill Championships being held on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July 2009 in Carrick, Co Wicklow. Carrick was the venue for round 2 of the 2008 NPS and will be hosted by new club, Flow Racing.
