2012 will see the first time an Alberta Bicycle Association sanctioned downhill race will be held at Moose Mountain. On August 24-26 the Calgary Cycle Alberta DH Cup Provincial Championship race will be held on one of the longest and most technically challenging trails at Moose Mountain, T-Dub.
A trail such as T-Dub is the ideal venue for Alberta’s top DH racers to battle for supremacy. With it’s numerous technical steeps, rocky gully and flatter sections that will test a racer’s fitness and strength T-dub will reward the strong and punish the weak. Past events have seen elite level results in the 5 minute range making this a long and challenging race.
Calgary Cycle has stepped up to sponsor the Provincials this year. CC has been a long time supporter of DH racing in Alberta and they show that nothing has changed in their commitment to bringing the best races to you. Along with their partner store Pure Cycle, Calgary Cycle will be providing the prizing for the race along with T-shirts for all entrants as well swag and T-shirts for all the volunteers.
Other sponsors will include Spolumbos Fine Foods and Deli who will be providing their amazing sausages for the BBQ that will be running all weekend. Base Mountain Bike Camps who will be shuttling racers Saturday and Sunday. Evergreen Golf and Country Club has donated two rounds of golf and cart that will be given out as a draw prize. Pinkbike is also sending out a bag of swag to give away and MMBTS will be providing shuttles in their spanky new van.
So sign up now and take part in the gnarliest provincial DH race ever...
The 2012 Calgary Cycle Alberta DH Cup Provincial Championships.
16th Annual Bear Mtn.Challenge XC/DH race June 30/ July 1st www.bearmountainchallenge.com A classic in the lower mainland of BC. Washington riders and Whistler ,Vancouver Island as well as some Albertans have been known to show up. I remember a couple of years back when some Chilean RockyMtn riders came out and won the DH.
No one has beaten the course record of 3:33 set seven years ago by a 16year old Steve Smith. It might have been his first pro race.
The Track "WE" chose and designed with Swain is going to be something Swain riders have not raced ever before
Stop #4 on the Gravity East Series will be heading to the Allegany Foothills of Western New York at Swain Resort. The quaint town of Swain has been developing and expanding it's resort every year. Swain began hosting lift-accessed mountain biking just a few years ago and last year developed a WNYMA sanctioned motocross track right on the hillside. On the weekend of August 25-26th, Gravity East riders will tackle a rocky, rooty, steep, fast, off-cambered race course called Sledgehammer.
Free camping is available onsite with contained fires permitted, restrooms will be open 24 hours, the Shawmut Grille will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a movie night on a 90" screen Saturday night!!
Swain's slope side bar & grill, The Shawmut Grille, opens during operating weekends and events serving up delicious burgers, wraps, wings, salads, and refreshing adult beverages. The outdoor deck is open with great views of the surrounding trails.
Mountain bike trails range from easy to extremely difficult, including various North Shore terrain features. Scenic lift rides, for those who simply wish to ride the lift, are also available during the lift-accessed mountain biking schedule (and Gravity East).
Swain Resort is a family-friendly downhill ski area, uniquely located on over 250 acres, situated in the mountains of Allegany County in western NY, that has been in continuous operation for 65 years. Current management took over operations in August of 2009 with aspirations of transforming the ski area into a four-season resort by introducing events like motocross, downhill mountain biking and an annual sportsmen’s festival.
