2009Race to the river! A Technical Guide

Nitehawk Recreation Area
Grande Prairie, Alberta

July 4th and 5th, 2009



The Bikehawks Gravity Bike Club in conjunction with NitehawkRecreation Area and Nitehawk gravity bike park, are proud to present the first annual Race to the river, an Alberta Bicycle Association sanctioned event.

The Race

As the opening downhill event for the 2009 Alberta Bicycle Association DH series, you can look forward to a weekend of fun, sun, and the most lift accessed vertical in Alberta. Course prep is on schedule, and racers can look forward to a variety of terrain including; tight forest single-track, switchbacks, drops, jumps, and a rock garden all twisted into the provinces longest race run.
The Place

Nitehawk Recreation area is located 15km south of Grande Prairie, Alberta on the banks of the Wapiti river. With the hot July sun expected, guests can look forward to onsite camping, chilling in the shade, taking the short drive to O’Brien park to soak in the river, or enjoying the many amenities the region has to offer. Organizers are in negotiations with the freestyle club to open the water ramp for the weekend, so lets all hope it happens. At 450km north of Edmonton on Highway 43, it’s a solid road trip, well worth the drive.

Directions

From Edmonton:
Travel West on hiway 16 to hiway 43, approx. 45Km
Turn north onto hiway 43. Follow approx. 430km to Grande Prairie.
Travel south on hiway 43 into Grande Prairie turn west (right)at 116 Ave
Follow through town as 116 ave turns into hiway 40.
Follow hiway 40 approx. 15km south of Grande Prairie, to the bottom of the Wapiti river valley
Turn right toward Grovedale and follow highway up hill approximately 5km
Nitehawk Recreation Area is on the right hand side of the road.

From Hinton:
Travel North on hiway 40 approximately 310Km.
Turn left toward Grovedale at bottom of Wapiti river Valley.
Follow up hill approximately 5km
Nitehawk Recreation Area is on the right hand side of the road

Registration

Registration is through Karelo.com, but race day registration will be accepted with an additional $10 fee.
All classes are $40 if pre-registered before July 3, $50 if registering after July 3rd. Full refunds will be issued if cancellation is received before July 3rd. After this a $10 administration fee will be retained. All racers must hold a valid 2009 ABA membership as well as a daily lift pass. Day licenses will be available for an additional cost of $10.

Schedule

The course will be open all day Saturday during regular hill hours for open practice.

Race day Sunday schedule as follows:

ABA DH Categories as of 2009

U13 *

U15 (Age 13-14) *

U17 / Junior (Age 15-1Cool Sport and Expert

Senior (Age 19-29) Sport and Expert

Masters A (Age 30-39) Sport and Expert

Masters B+ (Age 40+) Sport and Expert

Elite (Age 19+)

*U13 and U15 can only race on approved youth courses
*Age as of Dec 31st of the current year


Race Rules

Race officials are to be obeyed at all times.
Any abuse of race officials WILL result in disqualification.
Any racer being overtaken on the course MUST yield the right of way and not impede the other competitor.
In the event of a crash, if an overtaking rider is forced to slow or stop, they will be granted a rerun.
All other instances are at the discretion of the Chief Commissaire.
Full face helmets are mandatory.
Number plates must be affixed to the handlebars and be clearly visible.

Awards

Trophies and/or prizes to the top three in each category with Cash awarded to the top three elite racers.

Accommodations


For those interested in camping, we have reserved the groupsite for the weekend. There are 15 powered stalls available as well as many raw sites in the group area. Fully serviced, private stalls are also available. Nitehawk has allowed special rates for racers this weekend so mention the race when booking. Call 780.532.6637 Mon. to Fri., 9:00 to5:00 to reserve.

Contact your provincial cycling association for their specific rules as it differs province to province. Usually depends on how many points you get during a season

the date is wrong for the bear mountain race, it is this weekend not last weekend. I guess I should of looked at a real race schedule instead of depending on this one.
