Quick question about Diamond lower leg service - do I really need to take the cartridges out (as mentioned in the service guide) in order to separate the casting?

no ive dont it without removing them. remove bottom bolts mostly. hit with hammer to free ends from bottom of casting. then remove the bolts all the way. after that you can pull the lowers off

Exactly. I did a rebuild in the spring and when I finished, realized I never put the green o-ring over the stanchion to measure travel. This was the quickest way to correct it and works fine. Maybe a little more room to ding something up when putting the lowers back on is my guess why it’s not done this way in the manual.
