I'm in a long-term relationship with the original Giant Reign (over 10 years).

The geometry is reasonably up-to-date, the HA is 66° with a 08-09 lyrik U-turn (which is heavy as f, but the bike is still under 14kg) and the wheelbase is identical to the Kona Process I'm looking at (size S). The difference in the chainstay length is less than 20mm. I'm running Stan Flows tubeless, DHF/Purgatory tyres, RS Reverb, Float RP2 (long stroke: 167 mm rear travel) and (relatively) updated parts all over. I'm so used to the bike that it rides itself and the thing is stable, steerable and indestructible (even after spending its life in the French Alps).

What do I gain from entering the modern world? Is this just a mid-life crisis (I'm 40 and thinking of upgrading my wife also). Sell it to me people. x

its all about how many 0's are in your bank account in the mtb world.

If your 0's can buy you a new bike, then do it. If you feel like the time is right, what would hold you back? A forum?

Comparing your bike to your wife though... not sure abt that one. How about you show her what you post? Whip

Single Ladies in that age span is often a gamble with bad odds. Stick to what you know there mate. Make it work instead. Get her a bike maybe?

Change bike instead.

If not for geometry, then think durability. Alu has no lower fatigue limit, so it will eventually break.

Same here, 2005 reign.

Similar travel with the 57mm shock. I've been looking at a banshee rune.

Bit longer, lower bb, steeper seat angle

It's a trade off between an amazing holiday sooner with the frame (much) later in the year, or frame now and holiday later in the year.

Demo one. That will be the best way to answer that question.

Is it a good bike? I very much enjoyed it when I demoed it and they have a good reputation all around.

Thanks.

Built her a bike, but turned out she didn't need a hardtail DJ/4X sled.

I thought about the alu fatigue thing, but I'm intrigued to see how long the thing is going to last. It's been heroic so far.

Demoing was going to be my next step, but it's basically going to be a rental, plus if I can't put my own bars on it, it's going to be hard to compare. I'll probably do it anyway.

Banshee Rune, too niche for me. Looks like a serious bike though.

I think the question is, will a 2016 bike be that much better than mine? I don't particularly love spending 4 figure sums of money if it's not worth it in technical terms.

O+

BB height, suspension damper performance will be way better (depending what you get)... how tall are you? Could size up when you demo if you want to feel what a longer bike handles like.

You had the same bike frame for that long. My Rune lasted just till it was out of warranty and cracked where others have cracked. Crash replacement price quote was $1500. Needless to say I don't ride a Rune anymore.

Sat on an S in the store and it felt very right, but maybe...

BB height, not sure it would be much different, especially going from 26" to 650b

Will the rear sus really be better? Maestro vs. decent dingle pivot? I have my doubts.

I'm really talking myself out of this one. Like a happily married man refusing the advances of a hot chick, because deep down he knows his wife rocks in bed, in the kitchen and in the personality department. Then again, one night in the sack and I might reconsider...

The only broken 05 Reign that I know of fell off the back of a car on a motorway and was run over by a truck. Slightly over engineered (or was it?).
