Looking at sticking a Minion DHF on the front of a AM/Enduro 29er......I have 30mm ID rims. I am going to pair with a 2.3" DHR2.
When I trued a 2.3" DHF on a 23.4mm ID 27.5" rim it seemed a bit small and rounded so am leaning to trying a 2.5"
Does anyone have any experience on which size works best with this rim width?
I have a pair of 29mm internal rims, ran the 2.5WT, was great. kept the cornering knobs rounder and where they should be. Ran a Minion SS 2.3 on the back and the tire was quite squared off. I'd go for the 2.5WT personally.
I am interested to hear your feedback on the 2.5 DHF WT and how the profile looks on a 30mm internal width rim.
I am also shopping for a new front tire. I have a 25mm internal width rim and I am torn between the following options:
2.5 DHF Standard - too big and heavy? 2.5 DHF WT - is my rim too narrow? 2.4 DHR II WT - Is this a good compromise?
I have heard people running the Maxxis WT on 25mm internal width rims with good results. I am also leaning towards the DHR II for the front since it performs better for hardpack I hear.
I've heard good things about the DHR as a front tire, never tried it though. Not sure what it would look like on a 25mm internal rim. Their website says for 35mm rims, but I really liked the profile on the 30mm rim, maybe worth a shot.
I actually pulled it off and am running a thicker casing tire now, had the 2.5WT EXO. Its actually for sale if you want a DHF 2.5WT that was ridden about 150 miles on the front. Killer deal.
Thanks for the feedback. I was reading a tire thread here awhile back and a Maxxis employee chimed in that people have been using the WT tires on 25 internal width rims.
How do you like the minion SS as a rear tire? Do you lose alot of braking traction on steep technical stuff? I am currently running a Nobby Nic which will be replaced with an Aggressor here soon.
I like the SS on the rear, never had an issue on steep braking. My 'theory' is that rarely am I ever braking on a completely flat surface with the bike completely upright, so I figure a lot of my braking traction is from the side knobs. It has way more traction than you'd guess by looking at it. Majority of my trails are fire road up, descend single track, so love it for sitting and climbing dirt roads for an hour or two.
I couldn't find the 2.5WT listed on the US or U.K. sites so just ordered a 2.5.....I just opened up the bag the order came in and the tyre is marked 2.5WT.

Maxxis ineed to sort their websites out. @maxxis
Strange, Well glad it worked out, the 2.5WT should be awesome on the 30mm rims
I have to check my frame clearance. How would the 2.3s fair on a 32ID? Too squared or should it be ok. I am not a super aggressive rider by any means. I don't lean over hard in turns etc...
