Bottle cage screws in vintage Italian road bike.

I recently bought a NOS Italian steel road frame from mid 80 to early 90. I tried to install a bottle cage by using some modern cage screw with zero success. The hole is too small.
Does it use small size screws ?
What size should I use ?

I would guess that the screw thread is imperial, not metric.

An old school hardware store might be a good place to take the frame to see if they can tell you the thread size.
