I was wondering what forks should be the best to put on the bike for use downhill. I was thinking along the lines of maybe Marzocchi all mountain 3 or Marzocchi Drop off 3's. These are both single crown forks but im wondering also if triple crown forks would be any decent on it.
not on a kona shred hardtail are you mad!! kona frames are only warrantied for the 100m forks that are on them, any more voids it. plus many many kona frames have broken when triple crown or large single crown forks have been put on there as the frames are crap and can't withstand the stress on the headtube. i do dh on a hardtail which is gr8 fun n im building a sc jackal with 140mm pikes which i think is perfect withough screwing the geo too much putting a lightly large fork on it. if u do put a larger fork on the shred i'd stick to maximum 130-140 to be on the safe side for your own sake.
I riding with a Junior T 170mm on my Shred It look like a chopper and its very very squishy so its almost 125 or 140mm lolol and I do like 15 stairs gap and I never heard my frame suffer !
This is from personal experience.... DONT PUT MORE THAN 100MM FORKS ON! I had a 2005 kona shred, which I upgraded among various other things, the forks. I put some 2006 Manitou stance statics on, and I seriously regret it. Not only the amount of trouble I went through to get them on in the first place, but the ride after was terrible. They were 130mm, but the bike felt stiff and weighty afterwards. It didnt corner well and the geometry felt like I was riding a penny farthing! If you want my advice, save your pennies and get a dh bike itself, it would probs be worth it especially if your hittin the bigger stuff. Shreds are good bikes and not ones to be fuked around with, I learnt the hard way.
i saw an 04 scrap with marzocchi all mountains on about 130 travel. it looked cool and rode well so i dont think 20 mm or 30 willmake much difference just make sureyou get a srong fork

Don't you even think about it. That's the worst possible thing you could do. Get a real frame, one that's meant for a bigger fork, like an NS Bitch or 24 Toy or 24 Pornking or a Cube Flying Circus or a Voodoo Shango . . . Your frame will not handle it, nor is it built for it. Do not do that.

around here loads of people put on bigger travel forks (all the way up to 170mm) on the older kona frames and I've never heard of one snapping in real life. I've heard of a few on the internet..
But than I wouldn't reccomend it. 130 is probably the maximum that you'd want to go.
