Hi!
I'm a different sort of rider. However, it's you guys who seem to have my problems!
10 years ago I was in a RTA. Driver. Head on car vs lorry. I was badly smashed up.
#L3/4,rt clavicle, sternum, bi-maleolar ft ankle, talar dome.
I had an ORIF of my right clavicle
I made an amazing recovery. Went back to horse riding competitively and generally going about everything as normal!
However in Feb this year I was in another RTA. I developed pain over the plate which was unrelenting. 10weeks ago I had the plate removed.
It took two weeks to recover (terrible sternocleidomastoid pain) but then I made an amazing recovery- better than I felt in years.
I was told one thing- don't lift. So I didnt. I went back to riding and jumping- just felt amazing.
Then three weeks ago I had terrible shoulder pain resulting in me crying in pain.
I had the physio tape my ac joint (they thought that was the cause)... then I sat up in bed and heard a pop. The pain was awful. The clavicle had fractured through a screw hole.
Last week I had another surgery for repeat ORIF.
I'm in a lot of pain.
I've another 3 weeks in a sling and I'm so terrified it's going to break again... the plate is now the full length of my clavicle and just feels awful. The wound looks terrible- it's still covered up but the nurse said it's really jaggered.

Help! Has anyone been in this sort of situation?

Make sure you're getting enough magnesium--if calcium is brick, magnesium is mortar,--vitamin K, and vitamin D. Green veggies and sunlight.

Good luck is all I can offer, sounds like you have had your share of bad!
I got my plate going in tomorrow.
Bit worried about the no lifting thing, is that like dead lifts ect or?

Hi Andy,
Hope you are feeling ok.
I feel a lot less like I've been hit by a truck. I have another two weeks before I find out how things are healing and if I can start driving/getting back to work.
I was told don't lift anything heavier than a cup of tea.
I'm guessing you will be in a lot of pain...
I would advise 1g paracetamol every 8hours.
Oramorph 5-10mls every 6-8 hours.
Cyclizine 10mg every 8hours
Senna 2 tablets at night.
This has kept me going the last few weeks. I now only need the oramorph to lie down and sleep at night. I still need help sitting up on a morning.... but I'm out walking (can't drive and live on a farm in the middle of nowhere... so it's a five mile walk to civilisation.
Good luck. Hope you aren't feeling too poorly.

I had a type 4 shoulder separation after going over the bars about 6 months ago. I had a clavical hook plate fitted & was in a sling for about 2 months. I too was told not to lift anything heavier than a glass of water. The pain in the first few months was unbearable, so much that I couldnt sleep! I was put on codeine which I had an allergic reaction to & was put on tramadol which helped with the pain. With the help of lots of physio & taking it slowly, & resting, I now have 98% movement & my strength is slowly coming back. The hook plate is being removed next week, the specialist said it shouldn't take long to get over the surgery & be back on track to full recovery. The holes in the bones can take up to 2 years to completely repair. I'm a little nervous getting back on my bike but decent body armour on my shoulders should help with confidence.

Sorry to hear mate. OTB and broken clavicle in three pieces here, it was july. I've been lucky, no scar, 99% of function, already riding 100% and climbing too.
My only advice, aside from green leaf veggies and sunlight (seriously) is not to take anti inflamatories; in a fracture lots of cells die and toxines are generated, your body needs the increased blood stream to take the garbage out and bring the new stuff properly (with little research you'll find studies on the subject).
