Just getting back into dirt/park/4x again after a break. I've picked up an idenditi 666x built it up using hope 2 front hub on Halo rim and combat rear hub on Halo rim. Running on table top tyres. Just waiting for the next pay day to upgrade forks to something with less travel and then sort the gearing out.
My question is what sort of gearing are the single speed guys running. I'm gonna be mainly bmx and 4x tracks in uk. I was thinking 32/14??
What's your thoughts

Seems like the common range is between 54 to like 59-ish gear inches. In racing, gate starts are huge--you have to get out in front of people quickly. But it sorta depends on the track what the best cadence is....

Thanks I am trying to decide wether to change my front cog and run 32/14 on 24s = 54.85. or I can change the rear and run 28/12 on 24s = 56 but is 28 front too small in reality?

I run 28 12 on my 24" street bike. Works really well, feels similar to 32-14. My favourite right now is 32-13 on 26. Might be just right for you on 24s.

I am on 36/15 on 26", feels good, i only ride dirt though, no street.

That chart doesn't take tyre sizes into account though, so beware. On a BMX track, you'll probably want to run 1.75 or so, whereas for 4X, you'd probably want something bigger. It makes a big difference, and not just due to rotational mass. That said, on a BMX track, starts are probably more of the race, so a lower gear might suit anyway.

I run 25/12 on my street 26" (quicker) and 28/13 on my DJ (faster)

True. "Gear Inches" is Front Teeth divided by Rear Teeth X inflated tire diameter.

In this example, 20 X 1.95" tires are closest to actually being 20" inflated.

Similar with 26"s. Most DJ/4x tires would be 2.2" or 2.3"s. I run 2.20-ish on my BMX bikes too.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try running the 28/12 and go from there. I'm running 24s with 2.25 tyres
