I'm looking to replace the stock 60mm stem on my Diamondback Mason hardtail and I'm thinking about going shorter. Any tips on finding the optimal stem length? Do you rely on your LBS to demo a few different lengths or just take a random shot in the dark?

mostly you figure out personal preference over time. i go for as short as possible (my all mountain bike has a 35mm reach stem) but that is just my taste. I really don't see why you would ever go longer than a 50mm stem.

Thanks! I'll probably give 45mm a try first.
