I am likely to be travelling to the region above in France in the summer.

It is not quite the Alps, but I believe more just in the foothills.

Anyone done any cycling there? I am planning on taking my XC hardtail, as the holiday is with family and can’t imagine I am going to be doing any lift assisted riding while I am there.

Look on the site of utagwa vtt.
When the trails are markt in red dark red or black believe they are heavy. The French tracks are very nice but it's the land where they invented Enduro. You see that back in how they look at a track.

When you decide to go for the alps. The place Guillestre offers a lot of bikefun. There i would take something with rear suspension.
