Mech. engineer looking to get into dirtbikes and moto

Hey all
I have some extra money, my bike is pretty dialed, and i have no need for another bike, and so ive decided i want to start on some project moto bikes this year. A buddy of mine is a new mechanical engineer and wants to build stuff with me, so we are looking for people with lots of experience to sort of give advice on the subject.
Im not looking to build some crazy powerful bike or anything, just something that will be fun to learn on and maybe flip a few bikes. Want to know where 1) the best place to get shitty old bikes, 2) best place to find parts, and 3) best bikes to work on (ideally with the most readily available parts.)

I figure a Honda CRF is a good place to start, but maybe some of you have better suggestions? As the year goes i’ll post the bikes and progress in this thread.
