Marzocchi 888 compression problems

Hi ive been flooged a good condition set of marzocchi 888rc, seemed ok till fitted to bike but seems the compressions not working asmnd running off spring tension alone,
Ive been told that this is how they shoukd be and u cannot feel the compression(utter rubbish) as i had a set before and ran fine!
Plus when bike is picked up front end snd dropped slightly theres a clonking sounding like somthing loose of somthing missing?
Anyone know much about these as marzocchi not much help?
Or am i being led up the garden path
