Any comments VS. The standard stumpjumper before I pull the trigger on an evo frame and a new fork.

One thing I've come to hate about the regular stumpy is how it just feels REALLY active up front at speed, feels like it gets too excited and jumps about. Suspension can be run soft to get over that but then i loose the front end pop when I want it

Second thing, I cant get over how the suspension seems to buck me over jumps sometimes. I have been messing about with my rear shock every single ride for 6 months. Does the evo have a similar feeling or is it more linier, especially with a coil?

That's actually a good question. I'd like to see what others say about it.

I just wanted to mention that I don't notice the overly "active" front end on my SJ. In fact I think the bike feels fairly stable and about as "planted" on the front end as I'd like. Maybe the forks? I'm using PIKEs. Maybe the riders' height/weight, and you sound like you may be getting airborne more often than me too. The HT angle is adjustable on the EVO so I could really see that a benefit to a rider like yourself that's trying to adapt the way you feel that front end--you probably like a more slack HT.

What forks were you riding too that gave you that impression about the ST?

I've got 160mm pikes with a 44mm offset

Plus the oem fox rhythms 150mm.

It maybe just the terrain but recently it just feels like it wants to go all over the place. Jibbing and small jumps are fine but I just feel like the bike is bucking me off the pedals. Rebound is low. Ive spent considerable time messing with spacers and bands and with nothing added to the shock its fine but can barely get the sag to 40%, so any small bump is lost. I've seen a comment on this thread that the EVO fixes the excitable front end and is slightly less progressive than the standard SJ

@Mike172
Well there's obviously a phenomenon that I haven't experienced. I'm sure you're accurate in your description, I'm just saying I haven't had that. 150mm PIKEs w/51mm offset, running just over 25% sag, don't think these things make THAT much of a dif' though. Has to be something else. Did notice though that the PIKES feel awesome w/less sag, but I like less anyway so that could be me, but even getting deeper into travel the PIKE got really nice when I went to less sag.

Your shock only getting 40% sag? Maybe you're using something different than me, but you're also probably a heavier rider, those things change how air shocks perform a lot.

Sounds like it's obvious why you'd be looking for a coil. I think they've been talking a lot here on PB about how the EVO has a limited selection of coil shock options that'll work w/the frame. Someone on PB that's running one I'm sure will have an explanation.

Well I hope you either get the bike dialed-in, OR find the right bike w/the right geo to get the response you're looking for. I think I COULD enjoy a slightly more slack HT angle, but I'm very satisfied and don't feel like I'm desiring anything different for right now. I got s00pa' lucky combining the DPX2 (SJ tuning DHNM) w/the cascade and got the exact suspension response I wanted, but so many riders are always trying to get their desired set-up it seems.

On the topic of suitable coils. My 12.9 mm diameter shaft marzocchi bomber couldn’t cope with the side loading stess of the yoke mount.

Rockshox 12.7mm
Fox 9mm
Dvo 14mm
Ohlins ttx22m 15mm
Cane creek kitsuma 9.5mm

Of course shaft diameter isn’t everything. ( that’s what he said). The strength of the main piston head seal, shaft eyelet and many other things I don’t understand matters too.

I was wondering if anyone knows if air can shocks will be able to handle this Side loading stress better. And if the super deluxe is a good option. Like will it even fit

Air shocks will definitely handle side loads much better, as the damper shaft is a much larger diameter.

As for the super deluxe, I've had one in my bike for about 8 months. S2 alloy Evo. No clearance issues with the frame, gets kinda tight between the bottle and the piggyback. I filed the slots in my bottle cage to move it down a bit and run a smaller bottle, I have maybe 10mm between the bottle and piggyback now.

Never ran the shock stock, and opted for a Vorsprung Tractive tune right out of the box. Makes a massive difference in the feel of the bike, similar to what people describe the Cascade links doing.

Your issue is the reason I went with the Ohlins TTX22M. The shaft diameter is the largest of the bunch, and the seal head is by far the strongest of them all. The Fox units are notorious for having weak seal heads. But part of me wants to say its by design, as flex in the seal head is better than too much flex at the tail of the shaft wear these offset yoke layouts like to snap the shocks at. Servicing seal heads are a relatively straight forward job and could be included in a bi-annual service.

I've spoke to a few suspension specialist, and every single one of them agreed the Ohlins is the best coil shock for the offset yoke SJ frames.

What I'm really stoked on is the new Fox Float X. I've scoured every inch of the internet and nobody has an ETA closer than August 2021. For the interim, I've thought about going with a DPX2 again since I already have the Cascade link.

Thanks for the insight. I was wondering if you were blowing out shocks before the ohlins?
I think I've got to ditch the bomber I have and do either DPX2 or a super deluxe.
I've heard of some horror stories with DPX2 on evos but none on super deluxe but there is a huge sampling bias.

Any one who is running the DPX2 on there evo, what psi are you running in the shock and what is your wieght

Never blew out a shock, but read quite a few stories of folks snapping shock shafts on the SDU coil, Fox DHX2, Cane Creek IL coil/air and DB air. I'm 220 lbs kitted up, so if anyone is going to snap a shock, it would be me.

190 psi and I’m 145ish. But I’m running a cascade link.

Are these notches on the flip chip/mounting hardware normal?

photo

I feel that there is the tiniest bit of play when the flip chips are mounted in the eyelets. and the flips chips seem to have left a mark on the eyelets despite torquing everything.

have anyone else experienced this?

Normal, yes. Good, not really. (Just my opinion). Seems like the stumpy just puts too much bending stress on the shock there.

Mine is doing similar things. I try to keep a layer of grease on those parts to try and slow down the wear
