I a converting my 2015 Giant Reign 2 to a 1x10 drivetrain. I have all the compatible gear on the way except I need to know if the stock SLX Shadow+ rear derailleur will be able to handle the Shimano CS-HG500-10 (11-42T)? I would like to avoid a new rear derailleur if possible BUT will pony up for an upgrade (maybe XT) if I have to.

It should handle it, GS version have 35-tooth range and SGS version has 43 tooth range. You have 31-tooth difference, so it should be no problem whichever you have.
