Terrain, strength and stupidity are the variables. Any gear beta for a SS gravel grinder on mountain roads?

On a oval 32-19 (which I think seems perfect for what I do) I have an actual (wide freehub-footprint) SS cog that's a 20t that'll put on soon.
Dialing the chain tension with a oval ring was a pita on a horizontal dropout but without a chain tensioner.

-Edit: been riding 32/20 which is perfect for mtbiking. Started racing SSCX on that gearing which is too low, I have a proper 18t coming.
I'm all for being cheap but using gears from a cassette is a bad idea, get a new chain and get proper cogs

32x18 or 20 depending on where I’m riding. Not much flat land here though, it’s pretty much all up and down with a ton of rocks and roots.
