I'm trying to decide between these two bikes. The difference in price between the two is 500 dollars after discounts. Do you think it is worth the extra money to get the carbon bike? Most of the components are the same. Additionally, if I do go with the chisel, what upgrades would you recommend for around 400? I will be racing in NICA NorCal. The chisel weighs 25.4 and the Epic weights 24.5.
My vote for Chisel. Cons: - frame is very light - you can easy drop down weight to epic's. - frame shares the same geo, but gives more compliance due to frame flex - threaded bb - much tyre clearance
throw away stock heavy-as-hell cassette and stock build will be OK.
Chisel. The difference in weight is, at most, 1% of your total weight.
How to spend the cost savings:
1. Upgrade the tires. You'll improve your overall efficiency by more than 1% with top-of-the-line tires. 2. Leave work an hour early on several occasions when that hour makes the difference between a training ride and an evening on the couch. Or take afternoons off prior to important races to get ready and rest.
Those things will save you several minutes in a race, unlike a carbon frame that will save a couple seconds.
