Hi. My 2017 specialised stumpjumper has a RockShox Monarch RT, Rx 197x48mm. It has just crapped itself and i'm wanting to upgrade. What options do I have?
Stumpjumpers routinely kill rear shocks if you ride hard. Their proprietary shock mount causes increased torsional load on the stanchion and seals, and makes the shocks wear a lot faster as a result. this is particularly an issue for riders that corner hard, have stiff wheels, are heavy, or some combination of the three.
Get a BikeYoke adapter. The bolt configuration on it will allow some movement on the mount to preserve your shock life. You might look at the price and balk, but believe me--it's cheaper than needing a new shock every 500 miles. And then you can get whatever shock you please.
I personally recommend a coil for Horst link bikes like the Stumpjumper. It helps mitigate the suppleness issue many Horst platforms have. If weight is an issue, I'm a huge fan of the DVO Topaz for an air shock.
I've been looking at the dvo topaz but am not sure how I feel about about the fact that there is no compression adjust on the open setting. Thoughts?
I actually asked Remy Metailler about this on his YouTube channel and he responded saying he was very happy with it. I'm pretty sure he would also have a custom tune though lol.
