What does the envelope icon above peoples names in he inbox mean ?

There is sometimes a small envelope icon above peoples names in the inbox before you click on the message thread. What does this mean? Sometimes it is there and sometimes it’s not, sometimes it is there then disappears. I can’t find anything on what it means so if someone could cure my curiosity please lol thatd be great haha

When someone reads a message the envelope icon disappears. When they haven't opened it the envelope icon stays showing
