A while ago i bought something from an online bike shop and they sent me a free bell. I'm not sure if it was a gift or a mistake but it sat in the garage unused until yesterday.

It's a pretty nifty design from Knog, wraps around the bar next to my stem, and was really handy on my local ride. No more loud coughing to alert walkers to my presence, or scaring the life out of them as i pedal past. It's not loud by any means, and probably no good in road traffic, but very effective for pedalling along shared use trails where dog walkers and chatting are common.

Anyone else rocking a bell these days?

Loud freehub does it for me.

Although we usually install the most stupid bell we find on each others bike after nightfall of the first day of a riding vacation, and you cannot remove it as it was a gift...

As a significant portion (perhaps more than I would like) of my riding involves local parks and pathways, I'm amazed at how much more well received a bike with a bell is vs without. Sure my hubs make noise, but most joggers/dog walkers/kids react significantly better to that distinctive "ring-ring" from a bike bell.

It's one more thing to clutter the handle bars, but it's a small pain to be a good neighbor.

Idk if y'all have Spurcycle across the pond but you'll never buy another bell

If y'all want a hikers attention, give your best bear growl/impersonation! Works 100% of the time or get your money back!

My closest trailhead uses a shared path before entering the bike trails. Many walkers, runners, children, old folks use the shared path.. I used to say excuse me or allow my hub to let them know I was coming which usually rewarded me scowls and sometimes people would just ignore.. Now I rock a bell on my Megatower and when I ring I usually get a nice smile and a thank you for the ring as I pass by.
Feels good to feel like I am not being thought of as a dick and to feel I am being respectful. Everyone knows what the 'ding ding' means and almost always gives me room to pass.

That's exactly what I've found. It's like they've all decided they'll be miserable and angry about bikes, the bell certainly helps relations.

The same people seem to love horses using these trails though. Large volatile animals that wreck the trails in winter, do massive shits everywhere, and are afraid of their own eyelashes. Horses don't need bells to get people to say good morning.

For riding road I skip the Bell and use an air/fog horn and keep it in a bottle age mounted to the bars.
