I'm new to mountain bike riding and have been enjoying riding on weekends. Would like to get in another ride after work to work on my cardio which isn't great. Seems like all the trails I find on MTB Project and Trailforks are in state/county parks which close at dusk which makes riding after work in the winter challenging.

Can anyone give any pointers to places to ride where I'm not going to end up with a $250 fine? Do people find the rangers don't care as long as you're not causing trouble? Or do people just try to find more remote areas and hope for the best?

FWIW, I work in Sunnyvale (101/Mathilda) and live in San Jose (near Campbell) so that general area would be useful as I'm not looking to drive up the Peninsula or over to the East Bay or head over Hwy17 to Santa Cruz.

Henry Coe allows night riding although that’d be a bit out of your way on weekdays.
