Upgrade current 1x10 to 1x11? OR is 1x12 worth it? (in early 2020)

I have a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 650B from I belive 2016. LOVE this bike. When I bought it, I had the shop convert it from stock 2x10 to 1x10 wih a Sunrace brand cassette w/ bail-out ring. Remaining groupset is SRAM X9 rear mech and X7 rear shifter w/ generic black cranks (Sram BB30). I am located in North East Massachusetts and ride technical trails and get up to NH and VT occasionally for some faster riding. I hit just about any drop and like to air it out when I can. I do not NEED an easier granny gear, but I am looking for better shifting performance and when I need that bail-out ring, I don;t have to muscle that shifter to coax that chain to get up to that un-naturally tough reach for the rear derailler to make happen.

Looking at the prices for 1x11 groupsets these days, they are tempting. When I searched, I found some great deals on Sram GX 1x11 group sets (I would probably go for a better crank though). I also came across some shockingly affordable 1x12 options.

Is it worth it to make the jump to 1x12? Or, should I go 1x11? What is the weight and/or performance trade-off? Do I need new wheels with hub spacing for 1x11 or 1x12 (current wheels are Rovals that come w/ 2016 comp 650b model).

I searched but could not find exactly what I am asking here.

Thanks!

To run 12 spd SRAM or Shimano, you will have to change either the rear wheel or freehub body.

1x11 would be an easier transition not needing to change the freehub.

I find the new 12 spd from Shimano worth it, but I was running 11 spd. Nothing wrong with starting with 11 spd coming from where you are.

Really dependa on what kind of budget you have.

I'll go 1x11. Thank you. Trying to keep it at under $500.00 for this transition.

If your hub can be upgraded to micro spline the new XT 12 speed is a pretty great price point and supposed to work amazingly!

I am about to pull the trigger on this cassette. How long have you had it and how does it perform? I have heard of people bending the largest cogs when climbing which I am worried about...

I am looking at Sunrace cassettes on their website now. I see 11-42T which is the one I was planning on buying, but 11-50T is also temping... I have a 30T front chainring so I bet I can get away with 11-42T since I don't have any really long extended climbs where I live. Still tempted by 11-50T....

Just replaced my 11-42T cassette with the SR 11-50T cassette. Love it. Its nice having that extra gear to bail into when I get exhausted.
