I'm starting to get deeper down the suspension rabbit hole and looking into shock dynos. I've seen a couple of "hand operated" dynos and they have me curious, but a bit skeptical. It looks like they're just a leverage device and nothing more. No objective means of measuring performance as far as I can see. It looks like you just mount the shock, yank the handle and try to decide for yourself whether the damper is working properly based on how much resistance your hand feels. Is that right? Is that really all they are? And if so... How useful are they in practical terms? What does a hand dyno tell me that bouncing around on the bike in the shop parking lot won't tell me? If these things are really useful I want one, but if it's just a more expensive way to squish a shock without putting it in a bike I think I'm gonna pass.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?
