I want to try out a 170mm crank since my 175's get so many pedal strikes on technical climbs. I can get an inexpensive set, but was used in an 83mm bb. Would this work?

What about the bearing surfaces ? are they not usually raised on the
crank spindle ? ( RaceFace cranks are ) putting them further out than the BB bearings.

If no and the crank spindle fits snuggly, spacers to take up the gap difference,
then perhaps, but if you have to purchase the crank to find out, then I would
say go with the correct size.

Also, your pedals would be positioned further out, so on leaning corners, rock gaps,
you may still suffer pedal strikes.
