I've been running 2 "normal red spacers", not the purple ones made for specifically for this thru shaft shock. I ran none when I first got the bike and liked the feeling of the shock, but it wasn't progressive enough and any big hits would bottom out a bit too easily to my liking. Then ran 1 spacer for a while and settled with 2 after about 1.5 months of getting the bike (begging of last season).
I run 30-31% sag and now only bottom out when exaggerating - which is about 1-2 times per ride

awesome thank you! I was hesitant about the sag because I typically run through travel quickly but it has great support as is at 30% I'll put 2 spacers in like you did and see it that gets me where I want.

They work just fine, I ran it like that for ~2000km+ and everything is as expected in the shock (did the 200h service recently).
If my understanding is correct, the "normal red spacers" are thicker than the purple ones made specifically for this thru shaft shock. I believe the max amount of "normal red spacers" you can add in this shock is 2, adding a 3rd one would get it the way of some intervals as the shock compresses. I believe the purple spacers are thinner and can allow for more fine tuning, but I'm happy enough with the 2 "normal red spacers" not to look into it any further.

They work just fine unmodified, I ran it like that for ~2000km+ during last season and everything is as expected inside the shock (did the 200h service recently).

Here’s a video that I made for frame clearance for MY21+ regarding 230x62.5 vs 230x65 shock. I have an 8 in size Large.
In sum, I was able to fit one finger comfortably (in between shock and downtube) with 62.5mm stroke. Compared to 65mm, it was more like half-finger clearance to the downtube. Therefore, I believe size L and XL frames can take either 62.5mm or 65mm.
If you want to be within Trek's spec (62.5) or err on the cautious side, you can easily add spacers to reduce the stroke from 65 down to 62.5. (At least for Fox and DVO)

Ps. I was converting to coil and wanted to finally clear up this issue since no one posted any pic or vid about it.
Parts used: Upper Shock axle and bolt (599898 ) Lower Shock axle and bolt (5258210) If you are upgrading from Slash 7 or 9.7, you should have these axles and bolts already.
Fox eyelet hardware: M10x54mm (upper) M10x40mm (lower)
That was a fun adventure. I learned it's best to take the shock out to add spacers or be really careful. If your going to add volume spacers to the super deluxe, make sure you have 5wt50 oil and a syringe ready lol
Hey guys. Looking to buy a second hand Slash really soon. I saw some of you guys had issues with the thrushaft super deluxe, at least on the early models. Was that just an early model issue that has been fixed or it's still occurring periodically?
From all the reviews the shock performs amazing but reliability is my concern here. Being the second owner I may have issues with warranty.

Hi I have a creaking sound while pedaling and moving weight from one side to the other. I head that the issue is the main pivot at the chain stay over the bottom bracket. I removed and greased it since it was completely dry. The creaking was gone for a few weeks but is now back. I also noticed that the chainstay has a large tolerance and I need to tighten it with the bolt to close the gap to the main frame, is that normal!? Are your creaking sounds gone completely after you greased it? Otherwise I would try to get a new chainstay
suggestions for what coil to put on a 22 9.8 slash? I'm 5'11/195, ride in the rockies and the southern utah desert mostly. My thru-shaft super deluxe blah blah started spitting oil everywhere about 5 rides in. I also hate how the climbing lockout feels.
Unlike some people in this thread, I am a trek certified Mechanic who has experience putting both aftermarket air and coil shocks on many generations of the slash. While I dont ride a slash right now (Thanks insane lead times for EP) my co workers and team mates do and they have had me help tune the suspension to them.
The shock you will need is a 230x62.5 or 65mm. There are offerings from Fox/marzzochi, Rockshox, and DVO I believe. The new DHX is pretty good from what I have heard with some of the bugs worked out from previous gen shocks. Riding in the rockies with big altitude changes a coil is a great option for the slash!
While rockshox does not currently have a trunion mount shock that fits, their standard eyelet shock in the same dimensions will work. To use a standard eyelet shock in your 9.8, you will need the spacer and bolt mounting kit from a 9.7 bike. (the 9.7 and the standard 7 come with a fox float X with a standard eyelet). The part numbers you will need are as follows... (1)Upper shock axle (long bolt) #599898 (1) Lower shock axle (Long bolt) #5258210 I could not find the spacers needed, however your LBS should be able to measure an existing bike to get you the right lengths. I believe the lower might not be symmetrical.
With today's shocks having such a wide range of damping settings, you really dont have to worry about factory specific tunes from fox. Rockshox still does have tunes but the M/M is the most common for 4 bar and ABP style bikes. If you feel like you have to run your damping settings too far to either side, you can always have the shock re-valved to a different tune.
