So I have a friend that just bought a budget fat bike (Schwinn) he's complaining that it doesn't have low enough gears for him to climb hills. It has a 1x8 gear set. What are our options for adding more gears. Can he just swap out the front chain ring for a smaller ring. If we wanted to add more gears what would we need. I assume chain ring, cassette, shifters, derailleurs

I built a Northrock XC00 (Costco) fat bike and among other things, I swapped to a Raceface narrow wide 30T front, along with 170mm Shimano cranks and 11-34T Shimano 8 speed cassette. Works great for me and was dirt cheap on Amazon.

@lvdukerider, do you have any further info on your upgrades? I have same bike, looking at making some changes.

Look at box four 8 speed groupset , 11-42T with a 30T or even 28T in front is a pretty cheap with good range option.

I have a prime9 myself and I'm really pleased with it

I switched to a Pasak 32mm air fork, Easton EA 30 riser handelbars, Shimano M315 hydraulic brakes with 180 mm Avid rotors and adapters, Bullseye Monster aluminum 26'X80mm rims with 135mm front and 170 mm rear freewheel rear hub with Vee Mission Command 26"X4" tires, Altus Shimano CS-HG31 11T-34T cassett, Shimano Altus SLM310 8 speed trigger shifter, Rock Bros MTB platform pedals, Shimano 170 MM cranks, ODi Rogue lock on rips, Race Face 104MM 30T narrow wide chainring, DNM dropper seat post, ProMax DP-1 droppeer seatpost clamp with cabel guide, Fifty-Fifty MTB mud flaps, Orgion 8 FB-1110 Elite fat boie skewer, (front). There might be a couple more little odds and ends like lights, bottle cage, cage pod for tools, etc but thats about it. Everything came off Amazon and I did all the work myself learning as I went, purchacing a few specialty tools in the process. the bike was $299.00 and I dont think im in this bike for 1K including the purchace price. Its definatly not top shelf stuff but I had fun building it and it works well enough for me.
