Hi guy I want to know which is the better option. I just bought Marin Alcatraz with gearing being 32-14. I wish to change the gearing to be a bit higher without losing too much bottom end. I was thinking either going a 34-14 or 36-14 cog set up. Also if I change cog size will i have to get a new chain because of the extra teeth.

You will need a new chain. You may have to try both the gear ratios to tell really what you want. If you ride bigger jumps, I’d go for the 36 but if medium, 34. Make sure your frame has room for the teeth too

Switching to 13t in the back might be cheaper (I don’t know the rear hub specs on the Alcatraz).

Even if you went larger in the front, you don’t need a whole new chain, you just need to add one or two links, and/or maybe a half link. A single half link is two bucks, here for example https://www.empirebmx.com/catalog/chains

Yeah. My bad for the new chain thing. Putting a 13 in the rear may be easier. I second this
