I was thinking about getting a bmx to cross train on the street and maybe hot some dirt jumps. Do many skills transfer between Mtb and bmx?

I do a bit of bmx racing and the skills, especially jumping skills, are so much different for me. Going to a modern 140 FS trail bike to the bmx bike is so incredibly much different. The bmx feels super twitchy and unstable after getting off the MTB. Get a DJ instead

I know with stuff like bunny hops and 180's really transfer well. I used to be able to not 180 and fakie a 29er, but as soon as I mastered them on the bmx it transferred pretty well.

I use my mini BMX for something I do on the side and it's almost inderstrectable
