I've just received my new bike with a 2021 float X2 and I'm hearing a loud whistling noise when compressing the shock.

I've removed it and checked the bearings so I'm confident it's coming from the float x2.

Any ideas?

I remember reading in some review that the shock had some sort of buzzing noise that wore off as the shock broke in, seems similar to the sound in your video. I'm not sure if that's what the issue with yours is or not, or if that's just the normal sound it makes. Can't hurt to run it by fox and see what they say. The 2021 x2 that just came on my new norco sight makes a similar noise, but mine sounds a lot more squelchy, and the climb switch doesn't seem to do anything at all. I'll be sending mine off for warranty.

really glad I found this. Exact same noise coming from my brand new x2. Did the noise ever go away? How did this end?

Nope, still there. Never got around to messaging fox. It doesn't bother while I'm on the bike so I kinda forget about it. No issue with the performance aswell.

Sounds kinda like air in the damper to me. Seems to be a common issue with X2. Fox should fix that under warranty, but if you know of a local suspension shop that does damper work a simple oil change will probably fix the problem if you don't wanna mail it off and wait for Fox.

It's going for a service shortly so I will report back when it's done.

The few rebuilds that I've done on them makes me think that X2's are pretty ruggedly constructed and well made, but just susceptible to getting air in the damper oil. I'm betting that it's because they run a relatively low IFP pressure of 150psi. I think that air pressure spikes way above that in the can when the shock compresses and then a little air burps past the shaft seal in the bearing body and into the oil. I think that may be why they specify rebuild at 125hrs instead of having a 50hr air can service. With a rebuild you get fresh oil, an IFP recharge, and new bearing body-to-shaft seals, and keeping the service interval short at 125hrs gives less time for air to accumulate in the damper oil. ...but this is all purely speculation based on a few rebuilds. A more experienced mechanic might say otherwise.

I received a vitus sommet this week and the fox X2 shock has the same sound, sorry how you have it configured (LSR -HSR - LSC- HSC) for a long time I used rockshox and I'm like starting with fox. Cheers

Did the service fix it for you?

Got the same on my brand new Fox X2. It was noisy to beging with and I thought it was just breaking in. After less than 10 hours on it, the noise was very noticeable on the trail while descending.

Sent off to the LBS and no doubt Fox for some inspection and testing then hopefully warranty love.

Still no diagnosis but expecting to hear soon.

Just did my first rebuild on a 2021 X2 and I spent a lot of time looking at the shock and the manual trying to figure out why 2021 seems to be a problem child, especially with air pressure issues. I think I MAY have found something...

The photos in the 2021 manual are a little fuzzy in spots, but it really looks like the backup rings are not in the correct orientation on the eyelet in some photos. If you look at the 2019-2020 manual, it specifically states how you should orient the can O-rings and backup rings (O-rings to the inside, backup rings to the outside). The 2021 manual makes no mention at all about orientation and there are pics of the eyelet with the backup ring to the outside AND pics showing it on the inside as if the photos were not all taken of the same shock on the same day. Some of the pics also show the backup ring to the outside on the inner air sleeve together with the backup and O-ring on the eyelet REVERSED in the same pic. If you don't orient these things the same way, I would guess that they wouldn't hold pressure to the same degree. If Fox is being sloppy about this in the manual, perhaps they're being equally sloppy when assembling and rebuilding these things. I can easily imagine a total drone of a tech following the directions like it's a game of Simon Says, just sticking the parts on without thinking about orientation at all unless it's actually called out in the instructions the way it is in the 2019-2020 manual. There are people that stupid and lazy, trust me. I've worked with them.

Maybe this has nothing to do with anything and makes no difference at all. Maybe I'm not seeing what I think I see in these photos Either way, it's something I noticed and I thought it might be significant, so I'm mentioning it here. I'd love to hear some feedback on this.

Have a great day everyone Smile

Same issue for me on my three X2s

I thought it was normal. I also get a load of stiction when cycling the shock which gives me a massive thud/bump as it breaks away

Is it normal when all air is released for the X2 to be solid and not to move?
