Hemorrhoids, who else suffers?

Okay I have searched and nobody ever mentions hemorrhoids. So I will go first. Mine are internal. Missed riding in Prescott  last year because of a flare up. Madder

Why am I telling a bunch of strangers this? If you are passionate about riding I hope you never suffer from them. Keeps one from riding. Frown

Mid June this year it happened again. Decided to see a real DR and put this behind for good. Doc said you need a colorectal surgeon. Surgeon does a  banding on two 'rhoids. After 16 days 100% relief! Jumped on my bike and took a 30 minute easy ride- green & blue trails. Might have come back to that too soon. Whip

Anyway, at my 6 wk follow up I told the doc things had gotten better then got worse. He banded two more. This time no relief. Cry

Fortunately, mine aren't bleeding or anything like that. Feels like an insect bite. It's hard for me drive my car 30 minutes to work. Been taking ibuprofen & trying sitz bath 2-3 times a day.

Reaching out to my fellow riders looking for advice. Worried i'll need surgery for them. Heard it is nothing but horrendous pain for months. Very confused

Thanks for letting me vent. Really Mad

My sympathies! If your hemorrhoids are internal-are you manually reducing them? This alone will significantly relieve the pain.

So I've had this problem too. Had banding done, that's not fun hey!
There's some stuff in Australia, soov-it cream, its the only cream that actually worked for me.
Also Ive recently lost a fair bit of weight and my problems have gone away. Highly doubtful that its coincidental, I've had this issue for about 10 years, and now all the sudden its gone the same time as the weight loss.
I wasnt really overweight either, just carrying some extra, so that's something to have a think about too.

Good luck

Have you tried "Witch Hazel?" I don't know if it'll help your situation or not, but it does work on external ones. Available at most typical drug stores and comes in a bottle sort of like rubbing alcohol.

Also, if you're not pooping "soft serve" daily, and more than once a day, consider taking a good quality magnesium, and a lot of it, daily. You'll know when you've taken more than your body needs, because you'll be on the verge of diarrhea vs just soft serve. We're all deficient in magnesium, for all sorts of reason, and one thing it leads too is various levels of constipation, having to force, not pooping daily, etc. And that'll wreck things pretty nicely. You can learn more if you're interested, by visiting Dr. Carolyn Dean's website. She's the world renown specialist in Magnesium and related health issues/benefits.

What I'm about to write sounds seriously hippy dippy and I am usually always into the scientific method but what follows is what works for me.

About 30 years ago when I was 20 and suffering yet again from a small hemorrhoid, someone told me that hemorrhoids are caused by bottling up your emotions. And at the time I thought, as the Canadians would say, 'Yeah, right.' He told me the solution was to release the frustrations towards that person, punch them or yell at them. Neither is my way so I dealt with the person in a more responsible, respectful way. Hemorrhoids went within a few days.

Over the next decade when hemorrhoids reappeared, I would reflect back on his suggestion and he was right; it was always after, say, a month of being highly frustrated with a girlfriend or that super annoying work colleague/boss - the kind of times when you really want to yell at that person and vent your frustration but you can't, because it is going to cause you trouble - so you remain quiet and bottle up that frustration.

This may sound crazy, but if hemorrhoids are caused by internal pressure, and you are psychologically and physically wound up, then it kinda makes sense to me. I got them regularly from 20-30 (life = girlfriends and being the shit kicker at work), but from 30-50 (life = great marriage and more self confidence/power at work) I've had them very little. When hemorrhoids start to appear, I first identify who it is causing me frustration and either deal with them or change my attitude towards them - gone in 3-4 days every time. Note that I've been racing and training hard since age 20, so there's been no real change in my physiology e.g. no weight loss.

The mind and the body are strange things.

I am no proctologist, vascular specialist, or GI doc, I do work in the medical field, I am very western science. What you said certainly makes sense to me. We all know that our thoughts and feelings effect or physical body. Stressed people have higher blood pressure, when you get angry your muscles tense, think about food enough and you get hungry and have a tummy rumble. I can certainly envision a scenario where for some people when they are stressed/prolonged anger they create unusual amounts of abdominal pressure, plus vascular changes due to stress, and that is not counting if you are drinking or eating worse than usual.

Side note if the flag next to your username is correct it should be haemorrhoids not hemorrhoids, Wink That way you look even more scientific/fancy

Mine first appeared 25 years ago. They were a result from a bad cold coupled with allergies that had me coughing terribly. I always tried to be courteous and stifle or hold in the coughing. Internalizing that pressure is what caused the problem for me.
The fix wasn't banding, it was some kind of low voltage electrocution. It's been so long ago that I can't remember what the procedure was called. That worked for a long time until recently, where I had another round of discomfort. This time I used Dr. Butler's ointment and witch hazel. Worked like a charm.

O+

I agree with the remarks about stress. I'm in the same boat: I like my solutions based on science, put personal experience definitely also points to stress.
I have both internal and external. Interestingly enough, my doc tells me that internals bleed and externals hurt. That is true in my case.
I made some changes, some of which seem counter-intuitive but they work for me most of the time:
* Venixxa tablets. It's a bunch of tablets that you take for a certain amount of time. You can get it at the drug store or amazon. Worked like magic for me (in combination with the other things below)
* I work from home. At a desk. Sitting 8+ hours per day. So I got a desk that I can switch to a standing desk. I'm not standing all the time, but I'm switching it up during the day.
* I only go #2 when I really have to. It's not like I'm holding it in, but I'm also not going at the slightest inclination. If I need to go, I go. If I sit down and I can't go, I leave. I don't push, and no long sittings (don't bring a phone or magazine).

They bothered me several times per week. After the above I was free of them for months. It's not a fail-safe solution. Just last week I got 2 bouts of excessive bleeding again. But I'm hopeful that with the tablets and steps above I can control it.

Finally, and also to show that these things are different for each person: they actually do not bug me at all when riding. Only one time when I had a bad bout of external 'roids they bothered me. I think the exercise might actually help in controlling/minimizing it.

ymmv, I hope some of this helps, because my god, these things are a pain in the ass.....
