A massive timber harvest will begin at the Caspar Scales area next month. Trails will be closed to all for one to three years. This harvest needs to be stopped along with five other Timber Harvest Plans (THP).

Currently, JDSF management is NOT following their own 2016 forestry protocols and are marking trees to be cut larger than the "Restricted 48" limit. One such old growth redwood destined to be CUT is 77" in diameter! This tree is next to the EZN trail (Caspar Crossing North).

The Mendocino Trail Stewards (MTS) are proposing a 20,000 acre - Mendocino Coast Redwood Forest Reserve in the western segment of the 48,652 acre Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF).

We are NOT against logging, but we are against commercial logging next to our communities and trail system. In this reserve, any future logging would be for sustainability and fire suppression while being scientifically monitored by a professional independent entity. Recreation will become the most important use in the future!

The six THPs will greatly impact approximately 80% of our trail system. One harvest is slated to be directly east of the Mendocino Woodlands State Park built in 1934. The Woodlands SP is on the US Historic National Registry and is a US National Historic Landmark.

Trails in all six harvest will be closed from one to three years over the next 5 years of ongoing THPs.

Commercial logging is no longer viable here. Changes must begin to have a true demonstration forest where fire suppression is the primary concern. Slash left behind by previous harvest have only exponentially increased the fire danger we all face here on the coast.
Examples of poor forestry management:

Save what is left from logging the western sector of the JDSF
Save our trails and forests

The approximate 500 acre Caspar THP sold for just over $1.7 million. This equates to less than $0.50/board foot! While Mendocino County tourism in 2017 brought in over $400 million. The JDSF is a huge draw for visitation and recreation.

Please watch this beautifully produced video as it explains what we are proposing to JDSF management and to the state of California:
