so heres the deal. i just got a new old bike from my brother and im thinking of doing a 1x conversion. it currently has the sram x7 groupset and a 2x up front. i am planning on buying a race face chainring as i think its the only one i can use without changing my crankset. i dont want to cahnge the deraileur and since its a 10 speed i think i can use it but i dotn what cassete i need. does the shimano deore 10 speed cassette work with my wheelset and does my deraileur work with it all and will i need a new chain. these are my questions. if anyone has any answers please let me know.

also the bike is a 2016 trek slash 7 27.5 its purple and blue and its bone stock.

Not sure why no one answered your question so here's some things to consider:

First, we need to know what derailleur you have--if its short, med, or long cage. This is super important because you need to know what the tooth capacity (max cassette gear - min cassette gear) is, which amounts to the size of cassette you can run in your current config.

You'll be able to pick a cassette once you know how large of one you can accommodate with your derailleur. Its pretty much a guarantee you have an HG freehub and there are a ton of options out there for wide range 10sp cassettes. SunRace and Microshift come to mind.

Its possible you may not need a new chain as in 2x cross chaining would typically require about the same length as wide 1x, but YMMV depending on what your gears are right now.

Let us know what derailleur part number you have.

The older model derailleurs will probably only allow enough b tension adjustment range for around an 11-36 cassette (max low sprocket capacity) so you could fit a derailleur hanger extender.

Looks like you have the older Race Face Ride XC cranks so guess you'd be able to remove the granny ring and replace the outer chainring with any standard 104 BCD Narrow Wide chainring providing you can confirm the actual BCD is 104? If it is I'd fit a 32t replacement for a better climbing gear range. I'd also fit some 2mm ish chainring bolt spacers to get a decent chainline.

Having said all that Personally I'd buy a Microshift Advent X like HaggeredShins suggested with an 11-48 cassette, derailleur and matching shifter for around $160 USD. 2 cents

For the front end I'd replace the bb for a Hollowtech II and pay for a decent quality but cheap, dedicated 1x crankset+32t chainring package from eBay. Reckon you should buy a new 10speed chain to go with it. 2 cents

I just bent the 42T on Advent 8S (now called Acolyte) all steel cassette when shifting on a decent incline. Currently it is bent over the 2nd and 3rd cogs as well. I'll try to straighten temporarily until something comes into stock.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I was already considering moving to the 12-46 8S cassette. I am now concerned about quality/durability.

Now I don't know if I should buy the 12-46T or a Box 9S and a new Microshift shifter. But that is a huge price difference.
