With the release of the new Apple Air Tags got me thinking they could be a viable, cost effective means of bike tracking.

29 bucks each, small, no subscription, user-replaceable battery.

Thoughts guys?

Interesting thought, how waterproof/shock proof are they supposed to be?

Criminal gangs use GPS signal blockers when stealing cars etc so could probably be defeated in the same way, but would definitely help against more casual thieves.

They offer 'some' water resistance. This could be sealed with a number of cheap options (small ziplock etc)

Here's some more info & further enhancement that could make them even better, later this year.

The fact there's a "there's an unknown tag travelling with you" feature (probably to stop unwanted tracking of spouses or whatever), would probably alert the thieves to the presence of a tag in your bike. So probably completely useless in this use case.

Just read that on the Apple site, so maybe of limited use if you’re local criminal has an IPhone.

Security is all about layers though, so for £30 it could be another layer of security which may help if the worse happens.

If it offers some hope, rather than no hope of seeing a stolen bike again, it's got to be worth a chance?

Exactly, some criminals are surprisingly dense.

Best security is just keeping a low profile (keep bike inside house, transport it inside your car etc).

A top cap or bottom steerer accessory to fit one would be a great aftermarket idea.

What I read elsewhere, to avoid stalking if not matched to the phone for 96 hours (3 days) the airtag start to emit a sound.
With such a price and a set and forget 1 year battery I think it's a really useful stuff.
