Situation: Im building a trail bike that comes with 130mm 44mm offset fork. Id like to overfork to 140mm and use a RockShox fork which come in 42mm or 51mm rakes. Which offset should I choose? Show your work.

44 to 42 is so close I'd go for that. Overforking might add a tiny amount flop, shorter offset tends to reduce it, so in theory it will balance out. 10mm longer fork and 2mm shorter offset are very small differences though, I think you're safe.

I'd say only go for 51 if you want faster steering and easier turn initiation (if you want to make a big 29er feel more nimble for example). But coupled with the extra travel it might introduce some floppiness at low speeds.

What bike is it and what kind of trails do you ride?
