I recently had the opportunity to buy an almost unused 2013 Pivot Mach 5.7 XTR at a price I wanted to pay. It will replace an even older hardtail.

The Pivot comes with XTR 10sp Shadow Plus rear derailleur, XTR E-Type front derailleur, XTR M980 11-36 10Spd cassette, and 28/40 chainrings.

I had previously intended to upgrade the old hardtail to a 1x10, so have a Shimano Deore RD-M5120 rear derailleur, Raceface 32t narrow wide, and Shimano M4100 11-46t cassette sitting ready to go in the garage.

My question please, should I update the 'new to me' Pivot with the 1x10 gear, or is the older XTR M980 better?
