My Vitus nucleus 29 VR came with a Box Four 1x8 drivetrain. I'm thinking of getting a wider range cassette but I have no idea what to look for. It's a budget bike so don't want to upgrade to a completely new drivetrain being as the bike is only one ride old. Could I just buy a bigger 42 teeth for the climbs and make it a 9 speed or not. Any advice would be very much appreciated guys. Cheers

No, the shifter is only indexed for 8 speeds not 9. Also 8 and 9 speed derailleur have different pull ratios, and would require you to buy a 9 speed chain. If you're only worried about your gearing making the climbs easier and are not concerned with top end speed, then you could consider going to a smaller size chain ring (such as 32t to 30t).
