I have a buy/sell ad on pinkbike, and it gives me an option to repost it. What does reposting the ad do and is it necessary?

If people see a recent date they know it's still for sale. PB BuySell is full of old ads where people are too lazy to remove them after the item has sold. If the date posted is more than 3 weeks ago personally I don't bother enquiring.
