Just randomly slapped a set of calipers round my tapered steerer and found it isn't 1.5 inch but bang on 1 and 9/16 inch.
Is this common knowledge, and why aren't they 1.5 inch as advertised.

almost all modern mtb forks are going to have a crown race seat of 40mm. it is a nominal 1.5" probably a result of no one being able to decide what system to use. In general you can measure everything on a bike in mm. makes it slightly simpler maybe idk.

(people call somethings 1" and other things 25.4mm, people call some things 7/8 and other things 22.2) also why shimano rotors are 203mm

I have both a straight 1 1/8" steerer and a tapered 1 1/2"/1 1/8" steerer sitting here at home (bought off Ali Express). My notes say that the top of both is 28.6mm (so a real 1 1/8"). On the straight steerer the bottom is 30.12mm (so pretty close to 1 3/16") while for the tapered steerer its 39.9mm (which is a little off 1 9/16").
